NAMIBIA. The first Seventh-day Adventist evangelistic campaign in South-West Africa, as Namibia was then called, took place in 1937-38 at Windhoek and resulted in five baptisms. Except for two literature evangelists who worked in the area, however, no further evangelistic efforts took place until 1954 when the South-West Africa Field organized. The church grew slowly and most converts came from the European population until the 1960s when the first Black and mixed-race churches organized. As of 2003 the Namibia Field, part of the Southern Africa Union Conference of the Southern Africa-Indian Ocean Division, had 55 churches with a membership of about 13,000.
NELSON, KATHRYN JENSEN (1891-1970). Seventh-day Adventist nursing educator. After receiving a teaching certificate from Wau-paca County Junior College in Wisconsin, Nelson completed the nursing program at the College of Medical Evangelists (CME; later Loma Linda University), in 1917. She then worked as a supervisor at Loma Linda Sanitarium and the School of Nursing at the Washington Sanitarium and Hospital and served as a school nurse at the Danish-Norwegian Seminary in Hutchinson, Minnesota. Appointed in 1921 as assistant secretary in the Medical Department of the General Conference, she had the responsibility of overseeing the training of nurses in the denomination. She began an annual statistical survey of the denomination’s nursing schools and, recognizing the need for nurses to acquire further education, developed in 1924 a five-year pilot B.S. curriculum between Washington Missionary College (later Columbia Union College), and the Washington Sanitarium and Hospital nursing program. This affiliation helped prepare the way for the establishment of baccalaureate nursing programs at other Adventist colleges. In addition, she introduced a Nurses Institute in 1923 and a more formal summer school, beginning in 1924, to provide continuing education for working nurses.
Jensen (she was not yet married) also promoted the development of standards of nursing education, serving on the Committee on Standards and Qualifications of the Adventist Board of Regents that was established in 1928, and in the late 1930s pushed for accreditation of denominational nursing schools by the National League of Nursing Education. She traveled widely in the United States and Europe, assessing Adventist sanitariums and nursing programs. Appointed associate secretary of the Medical Department in 1932, she completed an M.A. in Nursing Education at Catholic University of America in 1936. She resigned from the Medical Department in 1940 to marry Nels Nelson, an Adventist minister in Minnesota.
After her husband accepted the position of chaplain at the Boulder Sanitarium in Colorado, Nelson, as she was now known, worked as clinical coordinator of the institution’s School of Nursing and helped integrate its curriculum with that of Union College. In 1948 she became the first dean of the School of Nursing at the CME in Loma Linda, California, where she combined the White Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Glendale with the CME’s nursing program. Before retiring in 1956 she also developed a graduate program in nursing. Nelson’s books included The Mother and the Child (1927), Fundamentals in Massage for Students of Nursing (1932), Kate Lindsay, M.
